Our clients are genuinely surprised when we tell them that the indoor air in most homes is around three times more polluted than the air outside. When that alarming news is reinforced by mold in closets or lingering odors days after a fish dinner, many clients ask us to help them find the most suitable air cleaning system for their home.

Unfortunately the industry is littered with scams like machines that supposedly drive pollutants out of the air to cling to walls, and fans containing a few cents worth of plastic mesh that can’t handle anything more than big balls of dust. Some products that cost thousands of dollars do not help any more than a regular fan. But there is one type of technology that does the job right – and that is air cleaners with a HEPA filter system.

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. Using HEPA filtration decreases airborne pollutants, improves indoor air quality and enhances human health. HEPA filters are so dense that they restrict more airflow than a mesh-type dust filter. They trap particles measuring as small as 0.3 microns with an efficiency of 99.97 percent. For every 10,000 particles within the filtering range that enter a HEPA unit, only three escape.

HEPA systems have been around since the 1980’s, but it is only now that they have entered the mainstream market. They can be found in several of our household products, including top-of-the-line vacuums, forced-air furnace filters and portable air cleaners.

The R.J. Wiley team is always available to answer any of your questions concerning HEPA air filters and maintaining the air quality of your home. If you have any further questions or wish to schedule an appointment with one of our specialists, please give us a call: 905-390-1808 / 1-866-678-2620.
