There are a lot of reasons why furnace operation could be noisy. Here are a few of the possible problems that could cause a furnace to generate noise and our recommendations on how to deal with them.
- Dirty furnace filter, or dirt and debris in the ductwork. As air passes through our duct system, especially at high speeds produced by mechanical ventilation systems or fans, it can become quite noisy. Anything that restricts or hampers air flow can make the air flow noisy. Dirt, dust, and debris collected by the moving air can collide with any impediments in their way. If this is a case, a qualified RJ Wiley HVAC specialist can replace or clean the air filter (depending on the model) and clean the system so that it is completely clean of debris and dirt.
- Insufficient cold-air-return ductwork. The intake register or duct may be too small for the amount of suction generated by the furnace. If this is the case, the RJ Wiley specialist will have to either enlarge the existing return-air register or install a cold-air return in another room.
- Poorly designed ductwork system. The more directional changes, right angles, corrugated ducts or restrictive registers in the system, the greater the chance of noises occurring during operation.
